Cloudflare CEO lays out bot-blocking and micropayment plan as AI-led layoffs draw backlash

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said the surge in automated traffic is eroding the economics of the web, with bot and AI agent traffic surpassing human traffic for the first time in May. In response, Cloudflare is pushing a three-part approach: blocking AI crawlers by default, reviving the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code with payment rails from Stripe and Coinbase, and building a usage-based revenue-sharing model for content creators. Prince framed the effort as a way to protect the economic value of original content as AI systems scrape data without clicking ads or buying products, leaving publishers to absorb bandwidth and server costs. The company, however, is also facing criticism over its own use of AI in workforce reductions. According to the report, Cloudflare cut about 1,100 jobs with the help of AI analysis. Prince, writing in The Wall Street Journal, described a management framework that grouped employees into builders, sellers, and measurers, with AI allowing the company to reduce middle management and widen manager-to-employee ratios from roughly 1:6 to 1:12. The report said measurers, including staff focused on internal audit and data monitoring, were the main group displaced. That move triggered public criticism and was followed by a decline in the company’s stock price.
